Solar Tuki Usage
"No more waiting in kerosene queues for me, and no more money spent on batteries for the radio!" says Nara Bahadur Tamang. Talking about the benefits of Solar Tuki he has installed in his home he says proudly, "No more fear of fire and smoke. No more groping in the dark for matches. All it takes is a flick of a switch to put it on and off!"
'School to School' Campaign
It is a simple concept of turning someone's wastage into a resource for another. It's a unique solution to a problem faced by thousands of remote village schools, that of lack of infrastructure and basic facilities. These are critical for a child to have a basic experience of schooling. ‘School to School' is a practical, cost effective and easily replicable concept, arrived at on the basis of prevalent practices in urban schools.
A small village school's needs are very basic. Normally students don't even have a pencil or copy to write on, a bag, school uniform, mats for sitting are a distant dream. The idea is to motivate urban schools and students to donate the material they discard at the end of the annual term as every year most school children buy a new set of uniform, copies, stationary, water bottles, shoes, lunch box etc. when they move to the next class. Discarded toys and story books can be additional items.
ECCA will help establish a relationship between an urban and a rural school.
The focus is on sensitizing the urban school children and their parents to the needs of their counterparts in remote villages. It is an on-going exercise where year after year an urban school can be part of this nationwide programme just by creating awareness about the concept, by motivating the students and without investing or spending any money.
A much bigger and an important positive aspect of the campaign is the support in environment conservation as well. As the entire concept is based on reusing, it enables use of every single item for many times instead of using it once and throwing away in the garbage.

" Buy new clothes for Dashain/Tihar - Give wearable clothes to needy people"
Fulfilling a basic need - Out of the three basic needs of mankind (Food, Cloth and Shelter), we believe that just by re-using our old clothes the problem of clothing can be solved to a very large extent without any major investments and policy decisions. It doesn't involve the expenses and efforts on holistic development of the society as in case of solving the problem of Food and no major policy decisions and huge investments are required, as in case of Shelter.
Development v/s Charity - A cloth does not solve all the problems of a needy person, but it give him the leverage to reallocate his meager resources. When we raise an issue of development v/s charity and say by distributing clothes we are promoting charity, we tend to forget that this issue might be relevant for western countries but not in a country like Nepal. The question of survival is the biggest question for half the population who either don't have resources or whatever they have is not enough even for a meal in a day. Although a basic need, the cloth doesn't even come in their imagination while struggling for survival.
The macro thought - Never stop donating by doubting that whether it'll reach to a right person or not. On a macro level divide the society in two parts - one is Donor and the other is Receiver. Always remember that me and you as donors never buy it back, the buyer is someone living in a small locality, a rickshaw puller, a laborer or a slum dweller. The fact remains that it reaches to someone needy, anywhere in some part of the country.
When VASTRA-DAAN takes the shape of a mass movement – A few years down the line when VASTRA-DAAN spreads through out the country, by simple rule of demand and supply, the supply would be much more, which means -
|
Much more clothes to more people, across the country, without any charge. |
|
The cloth penetrates deep inside the country, even to the remotest parts, fulfilling one of the basic needs of the mankind. |
|
The beneficiaries can reallocate his meager resources for other basic needs like food, health and shelter. |
|
The moment any disaster happens, we'll be ready with a stock of relief material and a network of donors, volunteers and agencies in place to face it. |
|
Thousands of people will be saved from a vicious cycle of debts, they get into around festival time for buying clothes. A lot of beneficiaries in Nepal exemplifies this, who on Dashain, their main festival, didn't have to buy clothes on loan because they got it from "ECCA-Wise-use". |
