Support-A-Child
Although the development in the education sector is significant, the situation where Nepal stands now is still far from the world status. About 50% of the 6+ year age group population is still illiterate and about 30% of primary age children are still not enrolled in school. A significant proportion of the children who are enrolled in primary school dropout form school. Many of these problems pertain to the social and economic situation of the country. Resource crunch has always been a problem in education. In Nepal, there are still many parents who do not send their children to school because of the financial situation. ECCA Nepal will facilitate to allocate and distribute resource through this campaign.

Objective of the Campaign
  • To reduce school drop out rate through increasing the school enrollment
  • To enhance the school enrollment and education standard for children through caring, supporting and developing students capacity and school environment.
  • To mobilize resources and promote partnership with individual professionals, private school, organizations, cooperates and business firms which will help supervise and sustain the campaign on an on-going basis as part of their "social responsibility"
  • To encourage and intensify children to support and achieve MDGs
Activities
Educate-a-Child
Educate-a-child program encourages direct support of individual students. Those who are financially backward need financial support to continue the study and maintain the education standard. By adopting a child, an individual or institution could support student by providing scholarship for tuition fee and acquiring other educational materials (text books, uniform, shoes, school bag, copy and pen). The program also aims to develop the capacity of the students through different capacity development activities.

School-to-School
'School to School' is a simple concept of turning someone's wastage into a resource for another. The focus is on sensitizing the urban school children and their parents to the needs of their counterparts in rural areas. ECCA helps to channelize their discarded material like old books, uniforms, shoes, school bags etc. to the needy school in Nepal, thereby reducing the drop out rate of the students in the rural school due to the lack of the stationary materials. This program is encourages urban schools and students to donate the material they discard at the end of the annual term as every year when they move to the next class.

Support-a-School
By supporting a school, an individual or institution could contribute to maintain good school environment and education standard. A school is a place where children have to stay for at least ten years. Besides financial and family problem of the students, lack of good school environment, educational materials at schools and other facilities - such as health care, school meals, drinking water etc also affect in student drop out. It is the common case in Nepal that the adolescent girl students drop out the school because of poor sanitation facilities and lack of privacy in the school. To discourage the drop outs, we must think of a child friendly school environment (maintain basic facilities in the school such as maintaining school buildings and classroom, healthy food, clean and hygienic toilets, safe drinking water supply, play ground, greenery, library, educational equipment, health care services etc.) and availability of good quality education.
Why to support
An individual, institution, organization, enterprises and people from abroad might be one to help spread "Educate-a-Child" Campaign for the benefit of children.

  • A vital role to make the campaign 'Education-for-ALL' and achieve MDGs successfully
  • It inspires and motivates children for school attendance and punctuality. It helps to decrease drop out rate and encourages student to build their brighter future.
  • Even a small help can bring lots of changes in the school which will ultimately benefit to children and through children the community themselves.
  • To play bridge role to link required resources to the place where it is necessary for fulfillment of the basic need of schools and students.
  • To listen and share with children about their educational excitement, educational problems, school environment and their personal problems.
  • To add up more energy to set up better environment in the school and welfare of the students.
  • To appreciate our social responsibility toward others.
Who are involved
The campaign requires strong partnership and coordination amongst a number of key players. Some of the key players will be as follows.

  • The students will be part of the major focus.
  • The school community comprising teacher, guardian and school management committee will have to be responsible for monitoring.
  • The community and its 'elected' local bodies who will have to provide working environment.
  • There should be the local partners who will usually be individual professionals, private school, organizations, cooperates and business firms. They will be provided resources (cash or in kind) in times of need.
  • The Environmental Camps for Conservation Awareness (ECCA) is the key agency providing the needed software support.

"Support-a-Child" is a concept of building up relationships, instead of just collecting the material and providing supports. To maintain this and making it stronger, ECCA will provide you details of the beneficiary schools and their students along with relevant photographs after the distribution. This will help a student, parents and the school to understand that what and how much difference have they been able to make and how can they support them in future also.
